YOUNG FINE GAEL CALL FOR BROAD YOUTH FRONT SUPPORTING REFORM TREATY

Young Fine Gael (YFG) has called for the
establishment of a broad youth front to campaign for a Yes vote to the forthcoming Lisbon Reform Treaty.
Speaking on 10 March, YFG President, Barry Walsh
said: “This is a very important referendum, both for Ireland and Europe. The successful passage of the Treaty will make the European Union more transparent, accountable, and efficient.

YFG is ardent in our support for Europe and for the Lisbon Reform Treaty. We will be running our own vibrant campaign calling for a Yes vote, and will demonstrate this through a variety of means, namely street canvassing, postering and leafleting, and we will continue to host and organise public meetings across the country. “However, we believe there should be a level of co-operation between the various youth organisations also campaigning for a Yes vote to ensure that the message from all pro-European campaigners is as strong and as cohesive as possible. Those committed to a Yes vote who are not members of an existing organisation should also be encouraged to get involved. “To help progress this matter, I have written to all youth political parties and many other youth organisations campaigning for a Yes vote to ask them to attend a public meeting tomorrow evening, Tuesday March 11th, at 7.30pm in Buswells Hotel to discuss the creation of such a broad front. I also extend the invitation to any other political groupings who wish to get involved, as well as unaffiliated young people. This will be an open meeting, with no determined outcome in mind. "Securing a Yes vote for the Lisbon Reform Treaty is a goal which is of fundamental national importance to young people, and ought to transcend any differences which may exist between youth organisations or along party political lines. YFG is happy to facilitate such co-operation, and we are inviting all interested parties and members of the public to attend our open meeting tomorrow night.”
